Make the most of the season by following these simple guidelines

The new season is a great reason to make and keep resolutions. Whether it’s eating right or cleaning out the garage, here are some tips for making and keeping resolutions.

Make a list

Lists are great ways to stay on track. Write down some big things you want to accomplish and some smaller things, too.

Check the list regularly

Don’t forget to check in and see how you’re doing. Just because you don’t achieve the big goals right away doesn’t mean you’re not making progress.

Reward yourself

When you succeed in achieving a goal, be it a big one or a small one, make sure to pat yourself on the back.

Think positively

Positive thinking is a major factor in success. So instead of mulling over things that didn’t go quite right, remind yourself of things that did.

Put your home on the list

The same approach works for the building you live in. Michigan homes take a beating between freeze-thaw cycles, spring runoff and summer humidity, and most of the expensive problems we find on inspections started as something small and visible a season or two earlier. Walk the exterior once a quarter and note what changed: gutters and downspouts pulling away, grading that now slopes toward the foundation, missing or lifted shingles, cracked caulk at windows, and any staining on the siding or in the basement.

Know when to call someone

Some items belong on a weekend list and some do not. Anything involving the roof, the electrical panel, a suspected gas leak, standing water against the foundation, or growth you think might be mold is worth a professional look before it turns into a repair bill. If you are unsure how urgent something is, that is exactly the sort of question a home inspection answers — you get a written record of the property’s condition and a clear split between what needs attention now and what can wait for next season.
